Addressing mental health

Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) is an area of high need in North Somerset. It is more important than ever to understand and respond to children’s mental health needs, particularly as these can often be a precursor to other safeguarding issues.

Our approach to mental health involves a multi-agency response to identify and support concerns based on the triangulation of three strategies.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) aims to address mental health concerns locally. Their website is a useful resource for getting help and support.

Held in Mind – Children in Care Mental Health Strategy

Held in Mind is an additional document which works alongside the CAMHS strategy. It provides specific focus on caring for children in care and care experienced young people. It is due to be launched in May 2024.

Right Service, Right Time – Directory of Mental Health Services

North Somerset Council made the Right Service, Right Time pathway document for professionals who work with children and young people. It aims to help them identify mental health issues as early as possible and get the right support at the right time for children and their families.

The guide is broken down into five levels of need. For each stage, professionals can see:

  • what might be happening for the child or young person at that stage
  • what they need to do to ensure appropriate support is organised for them
  • what services are available locally to help them do this
