Good practice

Recording

Always keep a record of the observations you make

You are required to keep a record of the observations of both the achievements and any concerns about the children in your care. In your records note the date and time. Include any conversation you may have with a parent or other significant person. You can then pass this accurate information on to children's services and use it when completing the referral form.

Parents and carers should be made aware that records will be kept on every child

Parents and carers should know that they are entitled to view these records. They should also be aware that the information may be shared with other professionals.

Records should be kept in a secure location

All records should be kept safe in a secure location until you are able to destroy the record confidentially in the timescales identified in the registration requirements of the provision.

Relationships with parents and carers

Develop an open and honest relationship with parents and carers

Involve the parent or carer in discussions and encourage them to participate in assessment processes. Work in partnership with them to agree and receive services to meet the needs of their child and family.

Agree clear expectations from the start

For example, that you will be adhering to the North Somerset Safeguarding Children’s Partnership approved child protection procedure and that you will make observations of their child.

Telling a parent or carer that you are going to or have already referred your concern to children’s services

Telling a parent or carer can be difficult, especially if you have a close relationship with them. Remind them of the registration requirements of the provision and the expectations that were communicated from the start. In many cases, parents and particularly young parents may need help with the many problems inherent in bringing up children. The reason you will refer the child may represent the parents or carers need for extra help. Your telephone call to children’s service will be the way in which that help is arranged.
